I spent the day in Limón, a province on the carribean coast of Costa Rica, watching my host brother Pablo's bike race. We left the house around 5:30 this morning and drove two hours through mountains of rainforest to the race. There were several places where earthquakes had caused landslides and the sides of the mountains were completely bare...such a contrast to the lush forest everywhere else. While Pablo raced, the rest of us went to "la feria," which had muchos tables of colorful souveneirs from different latin and south american countries. As much as i wanted to get a snowcone, i didn't know if the ice would be clean and i decided that my health was probably more important...boo.
We stopped at a restaurant on the way back and I had no idea what to order, but i ended up getting a traditional costa rican dish, "casada," which consists of beans, rice, meat and salsa. When my food came, my host mom asked me if i liked "casada" and when i answered yes, everyone laughed. I was referring to the food, but casada means "married" and i had just fallen for her joke and said that i am into married men. Good one, mamacita.
Here are several pictures from today!
This is Pablo and his wife Johanna, who is very pregant with bebe Felipe!
I've officially had rice and beans at every single meal (not breakfast) for the last 6 meals. We'll see how long I can handle this. Breakfast, on the other hand, is fresh cut mango, piña, papaya, and watermelon, with coffee of course. DELISH.
